S.Korean jets mistakenly drop bombs, hurt 15 NHK

The South Korean air force says fighter jets accidentally dropped bombs outside a training range and hurt more than a dozen people. Officials are blaming an error by one of the pilots.

The air force says two KF-16 fighters together dropped eight bombs. The incident happened Thursday in Pocheon. That's about 40 kilometers northeast of Seoul.

Firefighters say five homes were damaged and 15 people injured -- two of them seriously.

Air force officials say an initial investigation suggests one of the pilots entered incorrect coordinates for the strike target ahead of take-off.

They apologized for the incident and promised to take all necessary measures including compensation. They say they'll investigate what went wrong.

The fighters were taking part in a joint drill with the South Korean army and US forces based in the country.
