French police detain Syrian man over knife attack in Annecy NHK

Police in France have detained a Syrian man following a knife attack on five people including children in a park in the southeastern French town of Annecy.

Police say a man wielding a knife stabbed four kids aged about three years old and one adult at around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Two of the children and the adult are in critical condition.

The detainee is reportedly a 31-year-old Syrian national who applied for refugee status in France.

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted that the attack was an act of "absolute cowardice."

He said, "children and an adult are between life and death," and "the nation is in shock." The president expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.
