China consumer price index falls 0.4%, deflation fears remain NHK

China's consumer price index in August was down 0.4 percent from a year earlier, amid lingering fears of deflation.

China's National Bureau of Statistics made the announcement on Wednesday.

The consumer price index rose in June this year for the first time in five months, but remained flat in July.

Prices of fresh vegetables and pork were down last month, along with those of automobiles and other items, as consumers shifted to saving money.

The producer price index, which gauges costs for shipped manufactured goods, was down 2.9 percent year-on-year in August.

China and the United States are in trade talks after significantly cutting mutual additional tariffs.

But the economic outlook is increasingly unclear, as trade friction could flare up again depending on the outcome of the talks.

The Chinese government has made expanding domestic demand its top priority.

It remains to be seen whether the government can introduce effective economic stimulus measures.
