Israel says it will not complete the withdrawal of its troops from southern Lebanon by Sunday, the deadline that was agreed on in a deal to end fighting with the Shia Muslim group Hezbollah. The ceasefire deal, which took effect in November, calls for Lebanon's military to be deployed in the south of the country within 60 days to enforce the agreement, as Israeli troops and Hezbollah forces withdraw from the area. Israel's Prime Minister's Office announced on Friday that the withdrawal process will continue beyond the deadline because the Lebanese government has yet to fully implement the agreement. US broadcaster CNN reported that the Israeli government had told US President Donald Trump's administration that it wanted Israeli troops to remain in Lebanon for at least an additional 30 days. The Israeli military has been carrying out operations to destroy Hezbollah military facilities in southern Lebanon even after the ceasefire. It said on Friday that it located trucks loaded with rocket launchers and underground routes intended to be used by Hezbollah fighters. Hezbollah said that any breach of the 60-day timeline constitutes a blatant violation of the agreement. Hezbollah warned that it will take every possible countermeasure if Israel keeps its forces in Lebanon, raising concerns whether the ceasefire will be maintained.
