US confirms N.Korean troops 'engaging in combat operations' against Ukraine NHK

The US State Department says it has confirmed that North Korean soldiers have started taking part in fighting against Ukraine in Russia's western region of Kursk.

Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters on Tuesday that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia.

Patel said most of them have been moved to the far western region of Kursk, and "have begun engaging in combat operations with Russian forces."

This is the first time the US government has officially acknowledged North Korean troops' participation in combat.

Patel added that Russia's battlefield success will in large part be dictated by how well it can integrate the North Korean troops into its military.

He said some challenges Russia would need to overcome are "interoperability, the language barrier, command and control, and communications."

The United States has indicated that it is increasingly concerned about ties between Russia and North Korea.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is attending a meeting in Brussels through Wednesday to discuss support for Ukraine's defense against Russia with other countries' foreign ministers.
