Chinese Embassy in Tokyo criticizes Japan's message to Taiwanese president-elect NHK

The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo has reacted angrily to Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko's congratulatory message to Taiwan's president-elect Lai Ching-te.

The embassy responded on Sunday after Kamikawa issued a statement the previous day saying Japan "congratulates the smooth implementation of the democratic election and Mr. Lai on his victory."

She also said, "For Japan, Taiwan is an extremely crucial partner and an important friend, with which it shares fundamental values and enjoys close economic relations and people-to-people exchanges."

The Chinese Embassy described her comment as "a serious interference in China's internal affairs," and expressed "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" to it. The embassy added that it has lodged a protest with the Japanese side.

The embassy also warned Japan against sending any "wrong signals" to "Taiwan independence" forces.

China considers Taiwan as part of its territory, and criticizes Lai as a separatist.
