Palestinians return to north Gaza after Israel lifts restrictions NHK

Palestinians are heading back to their homes in northern Gaza, after Israel on Monday lifted restrictions on their access to the area.

Israel's move comes after Hamas announced that they would release three more hostages, including a civilian woman, by the end of this month. Aerial footage shows a mass of people trekking north along a seaside road.

Since a six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on January 19, Hamas has released seven female hostages, while Israel has freed 290 Palestinian prisoners.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday made remarks suggesting that he wants Jordan and Egypt to take in residents from the Gaza Strip.

Both Jordan and Egypt rejected the idea. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday said, "Jordan is for Jordanians and Palestine is for the Palestinians." Egypt's government said in a statement that the delay in restoring the usurped rights of Palestinian people is the basis of instability in the region.

The Palestinian Authority said such an idea "constitutes a blatant violation of the red lines we have consistently warned against."
