A popular shop in Tokyo’s Omotesando district that deals in specialties from Niigata Prefecture will close down by the end of this year and likely move to another fashionable location in the capital.
The building that currently houses the Omotesando Niigatakan N’ESPACE shop has fallen into disrepair and will undergo reconstruction work.
Based on an expert panel’s recommendation, the Niigata prefectural government will look for a replacement property mainly in the Omotesando, Nihonbashi, Ginza and other central districts.
“We will select a property from an extensive range of candidates, taking into consideration areas used as footholds by other prefectures,” Niigata Governor Hideyo Hanazumi said.
After opening in 1997, N’ESPACE became one of the most popular prefectural specialty shops. It attracted 1.006 million visitors in 2019.
Niigata Prefecture set up the expert panel to consider whether to turn the store into a shopping website or relocate it as another brick-and-mortar outlet.
The panel also suggested which customers to target and possible shop operators.
Chaired by Masanobu Nagao, an associate professor of business administration at Niigata University, the panel consisted of representatives from private companies and other specialists in real estate and marketing.
The panel held four meetings between May and October last year before submitting a report to Hanazumi on Dec. 26.
The report acknowledged the role of the specialty shop as a needed forum for Niigata’s exchanges with people in the Tokyo metropolitan area and foreign tourists.
It suggested making the shop into an information hub to inspire people to visit Niigata Prefecture.
