S.Korean, US militaries to start large-scale joint drills on Oct. 31 NHK

The South Korean military has announced that joint US-South Korea exercises will start later this month, involving cutting-edge stealth fighter jets.

Military officials said the exercises will be conducted between October 31 and November 4.

They say about 240 aircraft will be mobilized. These include F-35A stealth fighters of the South Korean Air Force and F-35B stealth fighters from the US Iwakuni Air Station in Japan.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the exercises will be the largest since 2017, when North Korea conducted a nuclear test and launched ICBM-class missiles.

It also said the drills will serve as a strong warning to North Korea.

Experts point out that North Korea could conduct its seventh nuclear test between the conclusion of the Chinese Communist Party's national congress on Saturday and the US mid-term elections on November 8.

On Monday, the South Korean military began regular field maneuvers. US troops stationed in South Korea are participating in some of the drills. The exercise is scheduled to end on October 28.
