Officials from Japan's Coast Guard are in the Philippines to provide their counterparts with specialist training. The two countries are concerned about China's growing assertiveness at sea, so they're focusing on how to preserve evidence when ships collide. About 30 Philippine officials took part on Thursday at the port of Manila. They learned how to assess the extent and location of any damage, and how to collect any paint left over from another ship. A Philippine Coast Guard official who participated in the training said it was a challenge to learn all kinds of new skills about criminal investigations. Japan Coast Guard official Masuda Takayuki said he would be happy if the training could help his Philippine counterparts take a step forward. Leaders in Manila have been at odds with Beijing over territorial claims in the South China Sea, and regional tensions are on the rise. Some Philippine crews have been obstructed or even rammed by Chinese vessels.
