Tourists were able to visit a famous Japanese sightseeing island south of Tokyo by taking an unusual route on a natural path that emerges only at low tide.
                
Most people reach Enoshima Island in Kanagawa Prefecture by bridge. But low tide sometimes creates a sandy passage to the island, and a local tourist association sets up a temporary stairway to give visitors access to the island.
                
About 3,000 people flocked to the area to enjoy the view on Saturday. Many of them took photos while walking to the island on the normally submerged pathway.
                
Visitors could receive a digital commemorative certificate of their participation by using their smartphones to scan a code on a signboard near the temporary stairs.
                
One tourist said it was &quot;very refreshing&quot; to cross the path that cuts through the sea.
                
Yuasa Hirokazu, the head of the local tourist association, said the natural route to Enoshima will boost its appeal to tourists. He said he wants visitors to enjoy strolling on the expanded beach.
                
The group will set up the temporary stairs for the public on May 26, June 9 and June 22, if weather permits.
