Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned that anyone seeking to pursue Taiwan's independence is splitting China's territory and will be punished by history and law.

Wang was speaking on Sunday during his visit to Egypt as part of his Middle East and Africa tour.

He said Taiwan's presidential election held on Saturday falls under China's local affairs. He added that the results won't change the fundamental reality that there is only one China, and Taiwan is a part of it.

Wang did not mention Taiwan's President-elect Lai Ching-te by name. But prior to the election, Chinese authorities had called Lai "separatist" based on his past remarks.

The foreign minister added that China will eventually achieve reunification and Taiwan will return to the motherland.
