Authorities in Kazakhstan say the flight recorders from an Azerbaijani plane that crashed last week will be sent to Brazil for investigation. The Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft came down on Wednesday in western Kazakhstan. It was heading for southern Russia from Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. There were 67 people on board, of which 38 died. Kazakhstan's accident investigation commission said on Sunday that the recording devices will be sent to the Brazilian air force's special unit for investigating aviation accidents. Officials say the decision is based on advice from the International Civil Aviation Organization, an agency of the United Nations. The officials say they discussed the matter with authorities in Azerbaijan and Russia, and took into account that the aircraft was manufactured by Brazil's Embraer. The Azerbaijani government welcomed the decision. President Ilham Aliyev has suggested the crash was caused by a stray Russian missile. Aliyev says Moscow should admit responsibility and pay compensation.
