China-North Korea trade in 2023 more than doubled from previous year NHK

The value of trade between China and North Korea in 2023 more than doubled from the previous year, recovering to near pre-pandemic levels.

Statistics released by Chinese customs authorities on Thursday show shipments between the two countries last year were worth more than 2.295 billion dollars.

The figure has rebounded to 80 percent of the level recorded in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

Freight train services between the nations increased in the spring of last year after being suspended for two years, and transportation by trucks has partially resumed. These developments may have contributed to the increase in bilateral trade.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The North has expressed its intention to strengthen economic ties with China.

China's President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un jointly designated 2024 as their countries' "Friendship Year" in New Year greeting messages they exchanged.

A Chinese organization involved in trade and investment with North Korea visited the country this week.

Meanwhile, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui visited Russia earlier this week as Pyongyang continues to deepen its military cooperation with Moscow.
