Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has claimed that male nationals abroad will be told to report for military service starting next year.
He says the measure applies to those aged between 25 and 60.
Umerov made the statement in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt and other media outlets published Thursday.
He added that the government is considering sanctions for men who do not show up.
Umerov's comments come after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week that his commanders have requested the mobilization of up to half a million more personnel to fight Russia.
But reports in Ukraine also released on Thursday quote the military's spokesperson as denying Umerov's comments.
US think tank the Institute for the Study of War said Ukraine will not be able to hold off Russia's military without more aid.
It said, "Only continued Western support for Ukraine can ensure that Putin's maximalist objectives remain unattainable."
