Trump envoy Witkoff holds fourth meeting with Putin NHK

US President Donald Trump has sent special envoy Steve Witkoff to a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two held talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.



The meeting on Friday lasted three hours, and it was the fourth time Witkoff and Putin held discussions.



Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said they talked about resuming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He added that Moscow and Washington are getting closer in their positions.



Ahead of the talks, Ukrainian and European officials had their own meeting in London. They pushed back on US proposals that would allow Russia's annexation of Crimea.



The discussions in Moscow come one day after President Trump criticized a Russian missile and drone attack. The strike on the capital Kyiv killed at least 12 people.



Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian foreign ministry, said Russian forces used a type of ballistic missile made in North Korea. He added that cooperation between Russia and the North has improved the accuracy of such weapons. He pointed out that the missiles use components made in the West, and called for tighter sanctions.
