Peace plan by US, EU refers to Russian control of Ukrainian territory NHK

A Ukraine-Russia peace proposal that the United States and European countries are working on says Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories would remain under Moscow's control.



The proposal also says the US could recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea in southern Ukraine, but that the European Union does not.



It says that after a ceasefire, the US and the EU would take the initiative in having Russia and Ukraine start negotiations.



The US is believed to have presented the plan to European countries. Russian diplomatic sources told NHK that Moscow is aware of the proposal but does not find it acceptable at this point.



White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Tuesday that President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff will visit Russia this week.



Russian diplomatic sources said Witkoff plans to explain the final version of the proposal to the Russian side.
