Authorities are advising caution against hypothermia, by taking precautions such as using blankets to stay warm. Evacuees are also being urged to avoid the so-called economy-class syndrome by exercising to reduce the clogging of blood vessels, that could be fatal in the worst-case scenario.

Residents should be on the alert for possible landslides as continuing tremors have loosened the ground.

As of 4 a.m. on Sunday, 1,534 tremors with an intensity of 1 or higher on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 had been observed.
