Russia's foreign ministry says that some staff of its embassy in Syria have been evacuated to Moscow by plane from its airbase in the country, along with North Korean and Belarusian diplomats. The ministry announced the evacuation on Sunday, saying that its embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus is still operating. Prior to the announcement, Reuters reported that satellite images taken on Friday show that Russia appears to be packing up military equipment at its Khmeimim Air Base in Syria's northwest. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who is in charge of Middle East issues, expressed hopes on Thursday that Russia's military bases will be maintained.
