Jeff Beck, a world-renowned British guitarist and eight-time Grammy winner, has died at the age of 78.
Beck's official website published a message on Wednesday on behalf of his family. It says he died on Tuesday after "suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis."
The comment says, "It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck's passing." It adds, "He peacefully passed away."
Beck was born in 1944. He came to prominence after joining the rock band the Yardbirds in 1965, replacing Eric Clapton.
Known for his innovative techniques on the electric guitar, Beck is said to have influenced legendary American guitarist Jimi Hendrix. He shared the stage with many famed musicians, including Stevie Wonder and Mick Jagger.
Beck toured Britain last year, giving energetic performances near the end of a musical career spanning six decades.
