United Nations officials say Afghanistan is littered with landmines and unexploded artillery. Authorities barely have any funds to tackle the problem, and children overwhelmingly pay the price. A report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says there were 292 casualties in the first half of this year alone. Nine out of 10 were children. Afghanistan is in the grip of a severe economic slump. No other countries have formally recognized the Taliban interim government, which seized power in 2021. The UN agency says a shortage of funds for landmine clearance and aid programs puts 3.4 million lives at risk.
