The Chinese government says it will stop reporting daily figures on coronavirus cases and deaths starting Sunday. The country's National Health Commission made the announcement on its website. It says relevant COVID information will be published for research purposes by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. But it does not mention the reasons for the change. Coronavirus infections are exploding across China. Hong Kong media say Chinese government documents leaked online estimate that 248 million people, or about 20 percent of the country's population, had been infected between December 1 and 20. The Chinese government stopped releasing the number of asymptomatic COVID cases on December 14, saying it is difficult to get precise numbers as many people without symptoms are not taking PCR tests. The latest move indicates that China's zero-COVID policy is no longer functioning.
