Myanmar people living in Japan have commemorated the victims of a massive earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28. The country's ruling military says more than 3,600 people were killed in the disaster. Myanmar nationals gathered at a park in Tokyo's Shinagawa ward on Saturday, which is the start of New Year on Myanmar's calendar. Performances of Myanmar dance and music, which are usually staged at the annual event celebrating the New Year, were cancelled. Participants instead offered a silent prayer for the quake victims and collected donations to support people affected by the disaster. They also wrote messages to people in Myanmar. A 24-year-old woman said she wrote "Hoping people can sleep well" as she was concerned they will wake up at night out of worry. A 33-year-old man from Myanmar's second largest city of Mandalay where the quake hit hard said his home was damaged. He added his family was unharmed and has taken shelter near the home. A Japanese man who visited the venue said he wants to help deliver aid directly to quake survivors in Myanmar at the grass-roots level. The organizers also plan to collect donations on Sunday.
