A Japanese oil company held a public test of a synthetic auto fuel it is developing at Fuji Speedway on Sunday. Petroleum wholesaler Eneos is making the fuel by synthesizing carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The liquid is virtually carbon neutral when carbon dioxide emitted from factories or other sources is used to make it. Toyota Motor President Sato Koji drove one of the carmaker's autos on the 250 meter track in Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan. The vehicle used a mix of 10 percent synthetic fuel. After the run, Sato said it did not feel different from driving an ordinary car. He said Toyota plans to work on synthetic fuels, while striving to complete a new car line-up aimed at decarbonization including electric vehicles as soon as possible. Eneos President Saito Takeshi said his company will consider the timing of commercializing synthetic fuels, taking into account the sales strategies of automakers. He added that he wants to make the fuel available on a commercial basis before the current target of 2027.
