Japan's health ministry says it confirmed 20,513 new cases of the coronavirus in Tokyo on Tuesday, up 713 from a week ago. This is the first time in about four months that the capital has registered more than 20,000 daily cases.
The daily tally has marked a week-on-week increase for 15 straight days.
The ministry also reported 14 deaths in the capital.
The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines is 37, up five from Monday.
Nationwide, 185,694 new infections and 231 deaths were confirmed on Tuesday.
