Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have held talks in Malaysia to address a renewed outbreak of military clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. A Thai representative said the meeting produced an agreement for the two sides to restart negotiations toward a ceasefire.
The meeting, aimed at easing tensions, was held on Monday in Kuala Lumpur. Representatives from both Thailand and Cambodia attended.
Clashes have continued this month along the border between the two countries. More than 40 people, including civilians, have been killed, and more than 600,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
At the opening of the meeting, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, whose country currently chairs ASEAN, called on all sides to halt hostile actions and prioritize a peaceful resolution. He urged both countries to uphold a peace agreement reached in October.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said at a news conference that both sides had agreed to resume ceasefire talks. He added that defense officials from Thailand and Cambodia are scheduled to meet on Wednesday.
