US President Donald Trump says automobile trade between Japan and the United States is "not fair," indicating again that he will not easily compromise on the extra US tariff on vehicle imports.



Trump made the remark in a Fox News interview aired on Sunday. The 25 percent levy on car imports to the US is a key point of contention in bilateral tariff negotiations.



He said he could send a letter to Japan to say, "You're going to pay a 25 percent tariff on your cars."



Trump added, "They won't take our cars, and yet we take millions and millions of their cars into the United States."



Describing the situation as unfair, he said: "I explained that to Japan. They understand it."



Trump went on to note that the US has a huge trade deficit with Japan.



He said Japan could buy a lot of American oil and other products to slash the imbalance.
