Japanese coast guard officials have been in Malaysia providing support to improve the abilities and effectiveness of their counterparts in Southeast Asian nations. The move is part of a push by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. On Wednesday, six officials from Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia flew on a Japanese coastguard airplane over the Strait of Malacca for about two hours. Japanese personnel explained ways of monitoring suspicious ships and illegal maritime activities. Kanosue Hiroaki, Japan Coast Guard Vice Commandant for Operation, said, "Japan and Malaysia place importance on the rule of law, and we recognize that cooperation between the two nations in maintaining maritime order has great importance for peace and prosperity in both countries and the region." Southeast Asian countries are encountering such problems as smuggling at sea and increasing maritime activities by China.
