Biden: US ready to provide Israel-model security support to Ukraine NHK

US President Joe Biden has suggested that the US could offer an Israel-model security framework for Ukraine until the country joins NATO.

In an interview with CNN on Friday, Biden indicated that Ukraine's accession to NATO is premature. He said, "I don't think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family now, at this moment, in the middle of a war."

However, Biden said that the US is ready to provide weaponry and extend other security support for Ukraine as it does for Israel until Kyiv gains NATO membership.

Biden said he had already conveyed this idea to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

With Iran chiefly in mind, the United States has agreed to help Israel possess capabilities to counter military threats from third countries.

US media have pointed out that this type of arrangement could help the US avoid armed clashes with Russia as it doesn't include a collective defense guarantee, unlike a NATO-type military alliance.
