People in India and other South Asian nations are marking the arrival of spring with celebrations of Holi, the festival of colors. The Hindu event is famous for its chaotic scenes in which participants spatter each other with colored powder and dyed water. Thousands of people danced to infectious rhythms on Thursday in Nepal's capital Kathmandu. People see Holi as an opportunity to unite across all social positions and age groups. The festival was also observed by Hindus in Muslim-majority Pakistan. This year, it coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Holi also means reuniting with family and loved ones. Millions return to their hometowns, or celebrate wherever they are. Even border guards far from their relatives mark the festival with colleagues.
