Turkish media say the head of the country's intelligence agency has arrived in Syria's capital, Damascus. This comes as Syrian interim leaders are reportedly planning to temporarily freeze the constitution which has existed since the time of President Bashar al-Assad's government. Turkey has backed insurgent groups in neighboring Syria and opposed the Assad government, which was toppled by opposition forces on Sunday. Analysts say Turkey is now aiming to increase its involvement in Syria. Attention is focused on what will come out of possible discussions between the Turkish side and Syria's interim government. Reuters news agency quotes a source close to the transitional government as saying the interim leaders will suspend the existing legislature and constitution. It remains unclear how they will govern Syria. The transitional government is led by Mohammed al-Bashir, the head of the de-facto administration in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib. He was appointed as caretaker prime minister after the ouster of the Assad government. The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had mounted airstrikes on targets in Syria in recent days, severely damaging the country's most strategic weapons and air defense systems. It said it carried out the attacks to prevent the weapons from falling into the hands of "terrorist elements."
