The season's first catch of spiny lobsters has been offloaded at a port in Japan's central prefecture of Mie, a place known for its large hauls of the shellfish. On Friday morning, five ships offloaded their catch of about 270 kilograms, 80 kilograms more than last year's first haul, but less than usual. At a workshop, the fishers' families carefully removed the spiny lobsters from nets to prevent them from being damaged. The season for spiny lobster fishing started on October 1 in the prefecture, except for some remote islands. At auction, the season's first catch of the shellfish fetched a high price, selling at as high as 7,500 yen, or about 50 dollars, per kilogram. One fisherman blamed global warming for the small number of large spiny lobsters. The head of fishers' association said lobsters caught in the area are known for their good taste, adding that he wants many people to try them. The spiny lobster fishing in Mie Prefecture will continue until the end of April next year.
