Hardline Republican threatens to remove House Speaker McCarthy NHK

A hardline Republican in the US Congress, Matt Gaetz, says he will try to remove fellow Republican, Kevin McCarthy, as the speaker of the House of Representatives.

Gaetz told ABC television on Sunday that he will file a motion as early as this week to vacate the chair.

He said, "I don't think the adult in the room would lie to House conservatives. And that is exactly what Kevin McCarthy did."

This comes a day after the House Speaker worked with Democrats to draft a revised spending bill, averting a government shutdown at the last minute.

The stopgap funding measures allow the US government to run from October 1 to mid-November. They do not include sharp spending cuts demanded by hardline Republicans.

McCarthy said in an interview with CBS television, "I'll survive." He added," So be it, bring it on."

Majority support from House members is needed to dismiss its speaker.

The administration of President Joe Biden is calling on the Congress to quickly approve funding bills for the entire new fiscal year.
