NHK has learned that leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are expected to discuss a plan to further limit Myanmar's participation in its meetings unless the military makes progress in agreements with the group. NHK obtained a summary of recommendations for the group's summit meetings in Cambodia next week. The document says the leaders may consider an implementation plan of the Five-Point Consensus with a specific timeline. Another recommendation says that unless there is progress in carrying out the agreements, Myanmar's representation at ASEAN summits and all its ministerial meetings should be limited to the nonpolitical level. After the coup in Myanmar, the military and ASEAN reached the Five-Point Consensus, whose commitments include an immediate halt to the violence. But little progress has been made on implementing them even though ASEAN has repeatedly urged the junta to honor the agreement. The military continues fighting with pro-democracy and armed ethnic minority groups. Observers are waiting to see whether ASEAN will take concerted action toward Myanmar's military.
