A senior White House official says the United States is considering enhancing defense cooperation with Japan and South Korea amid North Korea's growing threats. John Kirby, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, told reporters on Wednesday that bilateral exercises between Japan and the United States would continue in response to the increased tensions by Pyongyang. Kirby said the United States will look for ways to not only improve "bilateral military cooperation" but also "trilateral military cooperation with Japan, South Korea and United States together." He added, "Stay tuned for more of that coming forward." Kirby welcomed the Japanese government's revisions of three key defense documents to significantly boost Japan's defense capabilities. He said the move "demonstrates Japan's renewed commitment" to the Japan-US alliance and "greater regional security." He added that it will give Japan "more opportunities to contribute to regional security." US President Joe Biden is set to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in Washington on January 13. They are expected to discuss North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs and the situation surrounding Taiwan.
