Israel delays release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners NHK

Hamas freed six more hostages on Saturday under a ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip. But Israel says it has delayed the planned release of more than 600 Palestinian prisoners.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the delay on Sunday.

He said the Islamic group's handover ceremonies of hostages are "humiliating" and in violation of the ceasefire agreement.

Hamas strongly condemned Israel's decision in a statement, saying it represents a clear violation of the deal.

Footage taken by NHK's Gaza office on Saturday shows a male hostage appearing on stage and speaking in front of a crowd of Hamas fighters and onlookers.

A six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect on January 19. Under the agreement, Hamas has so far handed over 29 of 33 hostages, including bodies of the dead. Israel has freed more than 1,100 Palestinians from prisons and elsewhere.
