Floods from heavy rain that hit Afghanistan's northern provinces, including Baghlan and Takhar, around Friday have killed at least 160 people. The Taliban interim government is calling on the international community for help. A spokesperson of the National Disaster Management Authority says more than 220 people were injured in the floods. Over 8,000 houses have been damaged completely or partially, and many people have lost their homes. Safe shelters, as well as supplies of food and water, are running low. The World Health Organization says recent data indicates an increase in the number of cases of waterborne illness, notably diarrhea and skin infections, in regions affected by the floods. Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi from the Taliban government says the wave of recent floods is very destructive and the country needs a lot of help.
