World leaders attending the United Nations COP28 climate conference in the United Arab Emirates are pledging to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030. The two-day high-level meetings wrapped up in Dubai on Saturday with speeches by leaders from about 140 countries and regions. They took part in discussions on ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The UAE, which holds the COP 28 presidency, has announced that more than 110 governments agreed to a pledge to triple renewable energy, and double the global rate of energy efficiency by 2030. The UAE's COP28 Director-General Ambassador, Majid Al Suwaidi, noted at a news conference that the participants agreed on the first day of discussions on rules to operate the "loss and damage" fund. He said the countries have already delivered a lot, but this is just the beginning. In discussions over emissions reductions, leaders from European and island nations stressed the need to phase out the use of fossil fuel, but there has been no substantial progress. As there are differences among governments, further discussions are needed on how to reduce the use of fossil fuels.
