China's foreign minister warns US over its commitment to Taiwan NHK

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned the United States could face consequences over its commitment to Taiwan.

Wang sent a video message to a symposium on the international situation and China's foreign relations held in Beijing on Sunday.

He claimed that the US "has stubbornly continued to see China as its primary competitor," and because of this, "China-US relations were plunged into serious difficulties."

He also criticized US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for visiting Taiwan in August "in disregard of China's stern warnings."

Wang said Beijing has "taken firm and resolute measures, which have strongly deterred anti-China elements in the United States and the 'Taiwan independence' forces."

The foreign minister said regarding China-Russia relations, the two countries will "deepen strategic mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation."

Wang mentioned normalization of bilateral ties with Japan, which marked their 50th anniversary this year. He said, "The two countries need to take history as a mirror, treat each other with sincerity."

He added that it's important for Beijing and Tokyo to "steer the course of the bilateral relations from a strategic perspective."
