Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has called on Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru to use all possible diplomatic means to convince US President Donald Trump's administration to exempt Japan from its tariff measures. Senior LDP members, including chairperson of the Policy Research Council Onodera Itsunori, met with Ishiba at the Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday, and presented their first proposal in the wake of US tariffs. They called for supporting people's livelihoods and suggested taking thorough measures against rising prices in order to strengthen the economy. Specifically, they proposed releasing stockpiled rice to ensure its stable supply and introducing immediate fixed price cuts on gasoline. The prime minister responded by saying we should clearly convey what we need to say to the US. He added that the government and the ruling coalition will unite to protect people's jobs and their way of life. Ishiba also said he will make efforts based on the proposal. Onodera told reporters that the full-fledged impact of Trump's tariff measures is expected to emerge soon and that it is important to take preemptive measures before this happens. He also said the party plans to make additional proposals if deemed necessary.
