Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has held one-on-one talks with African leaders attending the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD. They agreed on a range of cooperative ventures. Ishiba met with Kenyan President William Ruto on Wednesday in Yokohama City, where the conference is taking place. Ishiba said Japan and Kenya are like-minded countries that share values and principles, and he wants to deepen cooperation to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific. Ruto said it is necessary to continue high-level visits and advance cooperation. Ishiba said Japan will work for Kenya's infrastructure development, including for a port. Ruto expressed his gratitude for the offer. They agreed that the countries will work closely on economic measures, including the promotion of investment. They also confirmed cooperation on international challenges and UN Security Council reform. Ishiba then spoke with Liberian President Joseph Boakai. Ishiba said Tokyo will steadily implement cooperation in road construction and medical care projects in Liberia. In talks with Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Ishiba spoke about Japan's support for human resource development, including vocational training, as well as mine clearance. Ishiba also met with Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius.
