Ukrainians ask Japan for ongoing support ahead of winter NHK

The world's ongoing support for Ukraine will be lifesaving this winter, several lawmakers from the country tell NHK World.

That's a key message they're sharing during a visit to Japan this month, Ukraine's first official delegation to visit Asia since the start of Russia's invasion.

The five arrived on Saturday.

Galyna Mykhailiuk, the head of the group, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sends a message of gratitude to Japanese for their support, and his hope that the support will continue.

She said because Russia has been attacking infrastructure, including power plants and other energy facilities, Ukrainians will face a severe winter.

Mykhailiuk said Ukraine is expecting people to go with without electricity, gas, and water.

She said the delegation wants to convey that Japan's support is essential to help rebuild infrastructure.

Donations of almost everything, including generators, heaters, and other supports, will be needed from all countries, Mykhailiuk added.

Roman Kostenko, another lawmaker on the trip, has fought in the war in the country's south.

He said the worst potential outcome is not a nuclear attack by Russia but rather Ukraine's partners tiring of supporting the country's fight.

Kostenko said without that help, Ukraine won't be able to accomplish its goal of taking back its territory, and Russia would only go further.

While the coming winter is a big focus now, he said he wants Japan and the world to keep paying attention to Ukraine's dire situation.

Kostenko stressed that support will be needed until the end of the war.
