US President Donald Trump has appointed the governor of the state of Louisiana as a special envoy to Greenland. Trump has repeatedly said that the United States should own the autonomous territory of Denmark for security reasons.
Trump announced the appointment of Jeff Landry on social media on Sunday. Landry is close to Trump.
The exact scope of Landry's new role is unclear, but the governor posted his response on social media stating, "It's an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S."
The Trump administration has placed importance on the stability of the neighboring western hemisphere, including Greenland, and is wary of moves by Russia and China to step up their activities in the Arctic Circle.
Trump told reporters on Monday that "We need Greenland for national protection." He specifically mentioned Russian and Chinese ships in nearby waters.
In a joint statement on Monday, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated Greenland's territorial integrity.
They said: "You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the US shall not take over Greenland."
