Indian people in Modi's home state vote in general election NHK

People in India headed to the polls to take part in the third phase of voting in the country's general election on Tuesday.

The latest stage of the world's largest democratic vote was held in several places around the country including the western state of Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Despite the intense heat, people showed up to cast their ballots. The election is being carried out in phases with over 90 electoral districts voting in the third stage.

Gujarat has one of India's fastest growing economies and it has attracted numerous Japanese companies, mainly auto-related firms.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party holds all the seats in Gujarat. Despite this, Modi has held several large-scale election rallies in a bid to ensure he wins another overwhelming victory.

But opposition leaders haven't given up on Gujarat and have also held rallies across the state.
The final phase of the election takes place on June 1st and the votes will be counted across the country three days later.
