China's military says its representatives and their US counterparts have held a working-group meeting on the safety of maritime operations.
It says the meeting of the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement working group took place in Shanghai on Wednesday and Thursday.
Chinese officials said US military ships and airplanes have been conducting reconnaissance and surveys as well as exercises near China. They said those activities could cause misunderstanding and could undermine China's sovereignty and operational security.
They said the Chinese military will continue to legally respond to all sorts of risky and provocative conduct to defend China's sovereignty and maritime interests.
The US military said the working-level talks "focused on decreasing the incidences of unsafe and unprofessional PLA Navy and PLA Airforce actions."
The framework of the dialogue was established more than 20 years ago. It had been suspended after the 2021 meeting due to strained bilateral relations. The two sides resumed the dialogue last year after reaching an agreement at the 2023 US-China summit.
The meeting is said to be the first since US President Donald Trump took office for the second time. Observers say it indicates Beijing's willingness to continue security communications with Washington despite the intensifying tariff war between the two nations.
