US, Japan, S.Korea to set up trilateral secretariat NHK

A senior US official says the leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea are expected to agree on establishing a trilateral secretariat to coordinate their countries' collaboration.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters the aim is to have an institutional framework.

US President Joe Biden arrived in the Peruvian capital Lima on Thursday to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Biden is scheduled to hold a three-way summit with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Friday.

Sullivan said, "We fully expect it would continue" under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Regarding North Korea, he said, "The possibility of a seventh nuclear test remains ever present." He said that Pyongyang has historically taken provocative actions both before and after the transition from one US president to the next.

Sullivan also said Biden will have a bilateral meeting with Ishiba on Friday.
