Djokovic ties Nadal with 22 grand slam titles NHK

Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has won the Australian Open, tying the men's record of 22 Grand Slam titles shared by Spain's Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece in straight sets on Sunday to claim his tenth Australian Open singles title.

Djokovic was denied entry into Australia last year after refusing to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

In the women's singles, Belarusian-born Aryna Sabalenka became the first "neutral" Grand Slam champion after defeating Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

The organizers required players from Russia and Belarus to compete as neutrals due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Aoyama Shuhko and Shibahara Ena hoped to become the first Japanese female pair to win a Grand Slam. But they were defeated by the defending champions from the Czech Republic.

Aoyama says she's determined to advance to the final again next year.
