NHK has learned that the Japanese government is arranging to offer aid worth 2 million dollars to the United States, in response to the raging wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The government is making arrangements to provide the assistance through the American Red Cross. An announcement is expected soon. Officials hope the funds can be used to provide safe shelter, food, psychological care and other support that meet local needs. Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru recently wrote on X that he is "deeply saddened by the devastating wildfires in California." He added, "We stand in solidarity with the people of the United States during this difficult time." Tokyo is apparently aiming to demonstrate its strong ties with Washington at home and abroad, mindful of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump next week.
