Itaewon crowd-crush survivor apparently commits suicide NHK

A teenage survivor of the Halloween crowd crush in the South Korean capital of Seoul has apparently committed suicide.

South Korean media reported that police are investigating the apparent suicide of the high school student who was found dead at an accommodation in Seoul on Monday.

The teenager visited Itaewon with his friends on October 29. Two of his friends were among the 158 victims of the tragedy that night.

After the accident, the teenager reportedly had been receiving counseling. However, his mother said in an interview that he was devastated by online slander of his deceased friends.

Local media outlets quoted Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as saying that more action could have been taken if the student had spoken out about his difficulties.

Opposition lawmakers criticized the prime minister's remark, saying that the government always shirks responsibility. Others said he should resign for his shocking comment, which is hurtful to the bereaved family.
