2 blasts shake Jerusalem, killing 1 and wounding more than 20 NHK

Police in Israel say two separate explosions in Jerusalem have killed one Israeli and injured more than 20 people. No group has claimed responsibility, but the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas issued a statement praising the blasts.

The first explosion occurred on Wednesday morning at a bus stop in an area where many Israelis live. The second explosion went off 30 minutes later in a different part of Jerusalem.

Local media reports say the explosives were packed with nails and others. Police are looking into the possibility of a coordinated terror attack.

Hamas described what happened in Jerusalem as a result of the Israeli occupation.

Bombing attacks have become rare in Jerusalem in recent years.

The incident comes as coalition talks are underway for former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government following the November 1 national election. He is expected to lead Israel's most hard-line government ever. Coalition partners include a far-right party calling for the expulsion of Palestinians.
